Can he have his beer and dream it too?
The 2018 Midterm Elections will be here before you know it and the Democrats will have plenty of ammo to take on the GOP. The Trump Administration has been one giant comedy of errors and their allies in Congress have been no better. The Democrats need to lay off the Trump-Russia story when it comes to campaigning and messaging. That fiasco will take care of itself. Between a leaky administration at war with our intelligence agencies and the media, I can’t see that ending well for Team Trump. Journalists are hard at work breaking apart Trump’s biggest lies. Russiagate is the last thing the Democrats need to talk about on the campaign trail if they want to take back Congress. They need to stick to the issues that affect voters in their daily lives like having access to health care. Paul Ryan’s Bud Light party with his grown-up College Republican bros at the White House a few weeks back will pound him in attack ads like a bad hangover. There’s only so many people in this country that want to read Ayn Rand novels but people need healthcare. Ryan’s frat boy beer dream will dry up soon.
Paul Ryan is the perfect lighting rod for the GOP. He’s a smug Speaker, blind to his misdeeds, and an all-around unlikeable personality. ObamaCare was a messy bill that took years to implement, but voters are starting to catch on and seem actually to like it over anything thus far shoved through Congress under the GOP. It’s going to be a hard sell for the GOP to win more seats if the full repeal of ObamaCare takes place and the voters get dumped with TrumpCare like a golden shower. Losing health care and while paying more will be a painful awakening for all.
But, will the Democrats have their act together by next year to take their message to the people? Let’s hope Tom Perez’s buddy cop act with Keith Ellison is genuine and will pay off. Can you imagine Paul Ryan being the right’s pitchman for ordinary citizens once their health insurance is gone and pre-existing condition protections vanish? Or, will the tide turn and take with it the Jerk from Janesville?
