Profiles in Spotty Courage

Flake and Corker show some spunk.

Desperate times call for drastic measures along with grading on a generous curve when it comes to the U.S. Senate and the Republican Party as a whole. I’d like to award U.S. Senators Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Bob Corker (R-TN) the first annual Profiles In Spotty Courage Award. While they haven’t done a whole lot to defeat Trumpism before and after the election, these two Senators are starting to break away from the Republican party’s rocky marriage to Donald Trump. It’s pretty obvious a lot of them have a discomfort with Trump at the wheel, but they’re too power hungry to speak out. Corker and Flake broke the mold.

Unfortunately, they won’t be running for re-election in 2018, so they’ll be clearing the way for the Bannon wing of the Republican party to seek higher office. It’s a pretty shitty deal. The Republican Party will get worse before it gets better (if at all). Senators Flake and Corker only have until January 2019 to make a difference. That’s usually a short period, but in Trump time, it’s more than a lifetime or two. Anything. Can. Happen.

Surprises of all flavors will be in store. We’ll see what Mueller and his team of legal avengers can bring, or any patriotic national security leakers can dig up before Corker and Flake’s gigs are over, and they enter the private sector to cash in. Will they leave a legacy and make history. Something’s got to give. Let’s hope that behind the fiery rhetoric from the Senate floor and off the cuff interviews that they can back it up with swift action to curb Trump’s reckless agenda and maybe even help get President Trump to retire to Mar-A-Lago for good. I’m not hopeful, but we’ve endured an alternative political vortex for an entire year; maybe the tide will turn. Brave and bold action is the scarcest resource among our elected officials. I tip my hat to these two fellas for showing some chutzpah. Cheers to hoping a few more Republicans come out of the shadows and shine the light on the Trump cloud of Russian smoke.
